Karina Buzzi
Karina Buzzi is a PhD student in the Applied Intercultural Arts Research (AIAR) program at the University of Arizona. A researcher and interdisciplinary media artist, her work explores the intersections of cinema, photography, video, music, and performance. Karina’s research and creative practice engage with the world through a perspective of knowledge as an encounter. This approach is deeply informed by her personal interests in Eastern philosophy’s emphasis on interconnectedness, Western psychology’s exploration of perception and memory, and her own spiritual practices, which anchor her creative process as a form of living ritual.
Through artistic installations, her methodology frequently makes use of repurposed materials, such as gifted or donated cameras, monitors, and other objects that carry their own histories. By engaging these items in a conversation that exists outside of their originally assigned utility, she liberates them from rigid, commercial purposes and enters into a dialogue with them. In so doing, Karina rejects a passive view of technology, instead calling for non-prescribed meanings of what image-making can be, transforming these objects into active, collaborative sites of storytelling.
Karina holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Photography, Video, and Imaging (PVI) from the University of Arizona, as well as an undergraduate and Master’s degree in Cinema Studies in Brazil.
